not really sure which one is absolutely required on the server to get
If you wish I can post the log file we need to see to do all this but then that is not what this community is meant for  the discussion is going in another direction.
X forwarding to work (perhaps just "yum install xorg-x11-xauth" will
do). If you want full-blown gnome desktop anyway, do

yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Yes I have done the same.
