This definitely ought to work.  Did you even manage to get to the 
bootloader "welcome" screen?
I was able to get to that stage OK, but then failed to get the installer to 
boot until I added "nosmp" to the kernel command line.  Apparently it's 
sometimes necessary on real hardware, too.
