You can use the same distro (i.e. all the files in the filesystem) 
but you need at least two new 'kernels' -- one is xen itself which 
is fairly small and boots first, the other is a modified linux kernel
which is adapted to run on top of xen instead of on the bare hardware. 

Take a look at the user docs, particularly the introduction and tutorial
for more detailed instructions.
