I'm almost " certain this must be the case for your Python install. That is more or less what happened. ant failed because debian snuck in a jdk into its testing distro adding yet another java implementation. I got ant to work by trying a few other jdks. About par for java. Turns out the build host had python-2.2-dev installed, but not the python-2.3-dev package.
