As far as I'm aware, the new Socket AM2 is NOT compatible with older
socket 939 (and of course not 754).
Of course, a 3500+ in Stepping F would only be useful if you either want
virtualization support, or want to use DDR2 memory. Both of these are
new features in the new revision of the processor, and not present (at
all) in the older stepping.
