I run into the same problems as you with the CentOS (RedHat)
distribution. What I do is the following:

mkinitrd --builtin=ata_piix -f <path_to_initrd_image> <kernel_version>

I usually build in all the modules I can statically into the kernel so
I don't have to deal with module dependencies.
