As an extra point, is ffs a better filesystem than ext2? And if so,
better enough to put up with not being able to read from my dom0?


IMHO ffs is better for BSD systems while ext2/3 are great for Linux. And I'm quite sure linux can read NetBSD's filesystems, look at CONFIG_UFS_FS.
