You mean the 2 X 1GB and 4 X 512 MB memory system crashed with 3.0.2? If so
that negates your 2GB DIMM theory. [I'd expect it to crash if the 2x2GB crashes
since the memory maps are identical]

Can you get a serial line on the machine to capture the boot output? That's the
only way we're going to make progress on this.
