Thanks for the confirmation, looks like we've mostly ruled out broken HW.

I'm asking about any GRUB debug tools which might help probe for the disk.

If your goal is to try out Xen, you can install it pretty readily on any
available HW and will have the option of booting either Xen or your native
(non-paravirtualized) host OS.  The Test CD just makes this testing process 
easier.

As for qemu:  we use it routinely here for testing purposes.
