------- Additional Comments From gnutered@xxxxxxxxxxxx 2006-01-20 03:18 -------
(In reply to comment #5)

Damn! I did a reply to this, and I thought it had gone through.

> Windows, etc.)?

Yes, it works fine in the Ubuntu distro on the hard drive.

Yes, from GRUB. The "grinding" I mentioned last time was actually the floppy
drive. The find doesn't "hang" either - it just takes time to finish.

No, no spare hardware.

I've got no explanation for this, but the CD-ROM drive is working fine (below)

I didn't do this, as I know the CD works in other machines, and I saw the same
result with both the 2.0.6 and 3.0.0 Live CDs. Plus these CDs work in the
laptop when booted into Ubuntu (below)

Yup, did this, on both the raw image (/dev/hdc) and by doing a find on the
mounted CD and dd'ing all the files to /dev/null.

For giggles, under Ubuntu, I fired the CD up under QEMU. Apart from running
like a dog, it worked, through to the gdm login.

So I'm pretty happy that the CD-ROM media and drive are function OK together

CD-ROM is not S.M.A.R.T. enabled, so the tool says.

That would be a shame. I got the CD working on a desktop machine, and am thusly
hooked on Xen. It would be a good thing, if this is a fault for others too, to
get it fixed.

I have started to make enquiries on the grub-devel list to see if they can help
debug this.
