Must have been before that when it worked.

If xvda is actually the problem, try booting the VM with:

xen_platform_pci = 0

in the VM configuration file. This disables the PVonHVM-devices, of which xvda is the disk "representation". The VM will now only see "sda" (as the default ATA-emulation).
