Of course.

There's usually a trade off between price - performance - managebility

Want price and managebility? Choose sparse file or use zvol (you'll
suffer some performance penalty)

Want price and performance? Choose LVM (It's somewhat harder to manage
since you'll always have to allocate full capacity from the start,
plus you'll need a little more money to buy disks)

Want performance and managebility? Choose netapp or other
snapshot-capable-copy-on-write-storage-appliance (whose cost-per-TB is
MUCH higher compared to the other two solutions).
