[Xen-devel] {Discuss} HVM Dom0 - XPDS2013

Hello XS Devel list,

The intent is to bring this topic to the notice of larger Xen
Developer group - for possible inclusion into the Xen Roadmap

Original author - Xiantago Xang etc..al (Intel) at XPDS2013
mailto:xiantao.zhang@xxxxxxxxx

What : support - HVM Dom0 -

Why: Current PV Dom0 - based on Linux + PVOPS patchset
Limitations of PV Dom0
-super page cannot be supported
-Traps to hypervisor (Thread switch, MMU update operation, Guest page faults)
challenges - huge efforts spent on pushing patches to Linux upstream
maintenanace effort
hard to push -
-Xen PAT
-Xen ACPI
-Xen RAS
HVM Dom0 - leverage new hardware virt tech (VT) for improving Dom0 perf

How: making HVM dom0 work

CPU Virt - same as HVM DomU
Mem Virt - adopt EPT/NPT, use super page
I/O Virt - VT-d, all physical devices are assigned to Dom0 by default

Interrupt Virt - Dom0 controls physical IOAPIC, Dom0's local APIC is virtualized
Hypervisor owns physical local APIC

Implications - -only add-on feature for xen project - does not break
exisitng xen's usage models
only used for new x86 platforms
