Oops, yes, that would have been useful to mention.

I was using a cross-compiler supplied by ARM, however I've just
downloaded the compiler from
http://www.linaro.org/engineering/armv8/#tab3
and tested with that just fine. Specifically it was:
gcc-linaro-aarch64-linux-gnu-4.7-2012.12-20121214_linux.tar.bz2

BTW for arm32 I use the cross compiler from
http://www.kernel.org/pub/tools/crosstool/files/bin/x86_64/
