3.4 is a bit old, why not use 4.1?

Recent Ubuntu enabled --as-needed in the linker by default. If you want
to stick with 3.4 you might need to add --no-as-needed somewhere
appropriate, 22856:18807b89083d is the temporary fix which we used for
4.1. This issue is fixed properly in 4.2.
