Because we are requiring installation (and redistribution in case of
products based on Xen) of a crypto library just for a simple MD5
checksum function.

Redistributing a crypto library is not easy: openssl is difficult to
redistribute due to the BSD advert clause, while gcrypto on the other
hand is difficult to redistribute outside of the United States as part
of a product because it requires explicit authorization for the exact
libgcrypto binary you are using.
I know that Debian and other distros have already sorted out all that,
but I still think that introducing all this pain just for an MD5
function is unreasonable.
