By the way, I am looking around the the current code of libvirt.
you should check following data exist or not.

"/sys/devices/xen-backend/vbd-%d-%d/statistics/%s"
or
"/sys/devices/xen-backend/tap-%d-%d/statistics/%s"

see read_bd_stat from following
