You don't specify the initrd with 'initrd' but as another module. That
is, this line:
          initrd /initrd-2.6.9-prep.img
should be:
          module /initrd-2.6.9-prep.img

GRUB only groks 'initrd' lines for Linux kernels -- not for multiboot
kernels. :-)
