If you really care about performance, running the latest versions is probably better than a old version on a unsupported version of Linux. If it is just map-reduce stuff you want to do and you can dedicate a 64bit box for it. I would recommend to use the Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) as it is a easy to install version of Xen.
