MogileFS will replicate the files across these drives. So, RAIDs are not needed. We are not intending to update the files at all. So, don't need POSIX compliance.

There exist MogileFS-Clients for Java/Ruby and we are going to use that one.

If you like the looks of MogileFS, I recommend having a look at GlusterFS. Gluster is more of a real filesystem (POSIX and such) but does the some replication and auto-consistency things that may be of interest. It's then all exposed to clients via FUSE, no special APIs required.
