Now that I think about it, that error can also come about if you try
to console to an HVM (hardware virtual machine) domain.  I'm going to
assume for the moment that's not your problem because you made it
sound like the second domU is close in configuration to the first one
- if true, surely the first one is paravirtualized.

I'm CCing the list so they'll see your direct reply with pertinent
information below.
