Two points.
With external disks in the sense of nfs or iscsi, no problem, but when using usb, be shure that the device get the same device-name each time. You can use the udev by-uuid entry for this. Look at: /dev/disk/by-uuid/*

Furthermore even when using usb2, the overal performance isn't great. I
would consider an etherdisk mounted with nfs...
