Hi there,

Well, I keep wondering why people use the xen-create-image tools…

Create the lvm partition yourself, use fdisk to make partitions on it (or use lvm paritions), use kpartx –a –p @ /dev/path/to/lvm to expose the thing (you can find it under /dev/mapper/ now), create a file system and mount it somewhere. Then use debootstrap to create the debian install on there, make some adjustments eg. setting network config, hostname and root password.

Copy the xen modules from /lib/modules/xen-2.6.xxxx/* /mnt/myvm/lib/modules/

Umount, kpartx –d of the thing.

Create the xen config file with the following content:

kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16.29-xenU"

memory = 490

name = "m1"

vif = ['mac=00:16:3E:96:00:01,bridge=xenbr0']

vcpus = 1

disk = ['phy:/dev/path/to/lvm,hda,w']

dhcp = "off"

extra = "ip=off"

root = "/dev/hda1 ro"

Now xm create your VM. Much easier ;-)

If you want the full options of the commands, just let me know and I will post them.

Cheers,

Jeroen

Subject: [Xen-users] Problems installing a virtual machine

Hello,

I'm having problems creating virtual machines with Xen. I've followed this tutorial to install Xen and it's virtual domains: http://www.howtoforge.com/debian_etch_xen_3.1. Well, it didn't work. The Dom-0 seems to be ok, but the xen-create-image is not running quite well. This is my command:

xen-create-image --verbose --size=2000M --swap=256M --ide --lvm=virtua --hostname=vm01 --memory=128M --kernel=/boot/vmlinuz- 2.6.18-xen --debootstrap --dist=etch --ip=192.168.0.101 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --gateway=192.168.0.1 --arch=i386 –passwd

I created the LVM group with the following commands:

pvcreate /dev/sda3

vgcreate virtua /dev/sda3

This is the full output from the xen-create-image:
