What's in your /var/log/xend.log, and /var/log/xend-debug.log?
Also, if you have trouble starting xend then check if the
directory /var/run/xenstored exists. If Sarge resembles
Ubuntu Dapper then /var/run will be mounted on a "varrun"
filesystem, meaning that it will be emptied on boot.
And if you're having trouble with /etc/init.d/xendomains then
check if directory /var/lock/subsys exists (basically same
story as above).
