Kevin,

   If the final event layer should be ready soon, I think it's probably
best to wait on this patch.  Then we can investigate what tuning
opportunities are available.  At this point, it seems this patch is not
too terribly large to keep out of tree and negatively impacts some
functionality that we all agree is high on the priority list.  Thanks,
