The interesting thing is that no one is doing anything to the serial input! This is happening 'spontaneously' in my setup. Sounds like a bug?

Yes, if that really is the case. It looks impossible though. That diagnostic output is only triggered from handle_keypress(), which is only called from serial_rx(), which is only called from the low-level serial driver.
