Summary: Xen dom0 crashes immediately after boot
           Product: Xen
           Version: unstable
          Platform: x86-64
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
         Component: Hypervisor
        AssignedTo: xen-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
        ReportedBy: at@xxxxxxxxxx

The Xen 4 hypervisor fails to boot the dom0 kernel under certain circumstances.
I'm not kernel dev but it seems to me related to swiotlb issues.

The kernel panic message is:

Kernel panic - not syncing: DMA(-12): Failed to exchange pages allocated for
DMA with Xen! We either don't have the permission or you do not !

Some random facts about the issue:

- Distribution: Debian Squeeze x86_64
- Hardware Dell R710
- Kernel version: 2.6.32 (Debian package 2.6.32-29)
- Xen version: 4.0.1 (Debian package 4.0.1-1)
- Xen 3/Debian stable fails as well (I didn't dig the issue though)
- The default (non Xen dom0) kernel boots fine, as does 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 on
bare metal (i.e. without hypervisor)
- It also boots fine with the hypervisor when disabling Intel-VT in bios

For a boot log with debugging information see See
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2010-12/msg00354.html.

To summarize the given thread: We operate roughly 20 more R710 none of them
failed so far (though those run Xen 3/Debian Lenny - that fails as well
though). This one, being the newest, is different only in minor details:

- It uses GUID partition tables because of the size of the internal storage
- It has another RAID controller (PERC H700)
- It has more CPU power (2 x Xeon E5530 2.40 GHz Quad-core processors)

Output of xen dmesg (with VMX DISABLED - with VMX being enabled it fails to
boot completely as said):
