before christmas, I had the system running, with two virtual machines, and I
copied a 650MB file via scp 1000 times between these two, then leave it
running, after cristmas, it was still running.

but when takint the server into production, it still dies after one or two
hours, so today I exported a directory from one of the virtual machines via
NFS, and mounted it on a remote physical host, then I created a 1GB file on the
nfs share and copied it within the mounted nfs share on the remote host. 

After an hour, the server was frozen again, so I assume it must have to do sth.
with the network interfaces.
