This is pretty odd: to my eye the scripts looks to have executed succesfully.

Before you run the network script, do you see broadcast traffic on your network 
if you run 'tcpdump -i eth0'?  Can you use another host to ping your machine to 
atleast generate some ARP traffic.

If you run the network script, does the peth0 packets received counters stick 
on 
zero? What happens if you run 'tcpdump -i peth0' and 'tcpdump -i eth0'

Is there anything interesting in dmesg? What kind of network card is this?
