Ubuntu VM is PV (paravirtualized), so it uses /dev/xvd* disks automatically.
Windows VM is HVM (fully virtualized), so it has emulated IDE disks, which are 
/dev/hd*.
(You can use optimized PV disks when you're done installing windows and you 
have 
installed optimized Xen PV drivers).
