this sounds like a very similiar problem i have (but with some PV guests):

when using private IPs on a (32bit DomU) and got replies on my list posting 
off-list from others describing similiar problems.

Have no solution yet - still played around i.e. with MTU changes. If i set up 
another public IP (alias or second iface) instead of a private IP it seems to 
work. Just crazy...
