Good news.

I made a lvm for hardy, and debootstrapped it. Installed hardy's
xen-hypervisor-3.3 and linux-xen package, which pulls in a package
which they have versioned as

Rebooted with the hardy lvm as the root fs, installed the latest
nvidia driver (190.16), and successfully started Xorg on my geforce
7900gt with that driver. Not sure yet whether it is the particular
kernel version or whether it is something to do with the earlier
version of Xorg in hardy. Could be anything really.
