True, so would running IOZONE tests be better? Because I have done a lot of 
that on these setups as well.

Keep in mind that dd is fine for testing raw sequential i/o but that  
almost nothing in the real world works this way.  (How often do you  
say to yourself "well, I need to go ahead and create an empty 16GB  
file?")
