That sounds good, Only when you are performing updates 1.x ... 1.z, But what if you wnat to upgrade 1.x to 2.x/3.x ?

It can be done as it is a nomal OS.
I've did this on all my CentOS 5.0 to 5.2 with no trouble at all.

Both I suspect ;)

If you're upgrading a PV aware OS then there shouldn't be any problems AFAIK.
