Did you try changing /etc/event.d/tty1 as suggested (s/hvc0/tty1)
exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

md5sum is the same
Also, make sure you hit the enter key, maybe you are missing the login:
Seems most likely a getty thing, ssh in and check carefully /etc/event.d/*
Check the running processes etc.
