Which Linux distro are you using? Most of them store their hostname in
/etc/sysconfig/network, which is read at boot time and used to set
hostname. There is also usually a GUI or command line tool for
gracefully editing this
CentOS 5.
You've all the reason: changing the value of HOSTNAME parameter in
/etc/sysconfig/network has been enough.
