Excellent suggestion.
This at least got me running ... mostly (invisible mouse & poor
resolution right now).

It appears so far that the difference in the generated config file there
are 1) less modules loaded and 2) it uses the "nv" driver vice "vesa".
In fact I will get the same error as before if I try the "vesa" driver.
