Why aren't you running them sequentially? /etc/cron.daily is your friend
for scheduling this kind of work.
That doesn't solve the conflict, but may allow you to work around it.

Thanks for the tip -- cron.daily never occured to me. Seriously though,
shouldn't the jobs be able to be run concurrently? Multi-tasking and all
of that...
 
Are you mounting the SMB directories read-only? It may also help.
