What is the output of /sbin/ifconfig? It should show something like 
this (amongst others):
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr <your_MAC_addrd>
          inet addr:<your_IP>  Bcast:<your_BC>  Mask:<your_Mask>
          inet6 addr: blahblah/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
peth0     Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr FE:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
          inet6 addr: fe80::fcff:ffff:feff:ffff/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING NOARP  MTU:1500  Metric:1
Check that both interfaces are UP and RUNNING.
