If I remember correctly, the code is still in the vanilla kernel, but the
config option has been removed to activate it. I'm not sure about 2.6.17,
but in 2.6.16 devfs was included in the code. 
Debian Etch won't use devfs any longer of course.

Well, there are other initrd builders as well, yaird is just the option I
took for my sarge dom0/domUs, so it was the most easy to remember ;)
