totally my fault.
turns out that the initrd is already compressed to thats:
  $ cp initrd <linux build>/arch/powerpc/boot/ramdisk.image.gz
 
  3. $ make <linux flags> zImage.initrd
Then try using <linux build>/arch/powerpc/boot/zImage.initrd as your
Dom0

like an initrd
