It shouldn't have been a surprise... I did announce
the change here:
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-ia64-devel/2005-09/msg00014
.html
Arun started the layout change when he pulled all the
linux files directly into the tree and added the extra
level of directory hierarchy (using the VPATH feature
of make). This left things in a somewhat inconsistent
structure, which I fixed when I rebased to 2.6.13.
I think the result (after both Arun's changes and mine)
is much more understandable and easy to use for new
developers and users, especially since its more like
Linux/ia64 (which uses subdirectories under arch/ia64).
It is different from Xen/x86, but x86 doesn't have nearly
as many source files... and x86 does use subdirectories
for some functionality. If you are concerned that I moved
vmx files into a subdirectory, note the number of such
files for x86 vs ia64. It seemed like a reasonable division
for a subdirectory on ia64.
I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to by the
"impact to merge... back to xen"? All the layout
change is under arch/ia64 and include/asm-ia64 and
I used "hg rm" and "hg add" for all the changes
so there shouldn't be any merge issues.
Or am I misunderstanding your question?
