There's trouble when `ip route` includes metrics in the result -- picking out
interface numbers can be accomplished with this function:

    function nums {
      ip route list | egrep -o '^default .* dev [^ ]+' | egrep -o '[0-9]$'
    }

Do we pick the first or the last one? I don't know -- let's say the first:

    vifnum=${vifnum:-$(nums | head -n 1)}
